Rogue City Subscriber Spotlight

Meet Gabby and Nelson, heroes who share a love of comics and for each other. We have the most amazing patrons - our shop family - and we're going to be sharing your stories on our blog!

When did you 1st fall in love with comics?

Nelson - I fell in love with comics when I was around 12 years old. I think my first comic was about The Incredible Hulk which I found at a grocery store. When I grew older, I started getting into video games and stopped reading comics for a while but they came back when I met my fiance! Gabby is really into them and she took me to Rogue City Comics when we first started dating. At first I was reluctant and thought to myself “this is something I totally outgrew, why am I back here?” But I wanted her to like me so I started investing in some so we can have something more to talk about and relate to. And it started with one comic, then another, and another, up to the point where I bought my own box! I have been collecting since 2019 and have no intention of stopping!

Gabby - I fell in love with comics my first year of college when my friends took me to a small shop and helped me pick out a couple issues they thought I would like. I discovered Chip Zdarsky’s run of Daredevil and was completely hooked! I fell in love with comics again when I got to share my love of the medium with Nelson and watched him rediscover the joy of comic book collecting.

Can you explain in one sentence, why you enjoy comics?

Nelson - I enjoy comics because you can’t really help but want to immerse yourself into the world the comic is painting for you! Gabby - I enjoy comics because they are the perfect blend of incredible art and immersive storytelling.

What are some of your favorite modern titles?

Nelson - Hard to answer because there are so. many. comics. But for now, I enjoy reading The Old Guard, Crossover, God Country, The King in Black, and Batman: Black and White. Gabby - I have so many favorites! If I had to narrow it down, my top three would be Firepower by Robert Kirkman and Chris Samnee, Outcast by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta, and Lady Mechanika by Joe Benitez.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Nelson - If I could have any superpower, it would be the power of The Flash. I want to be a speedster which I am a little surprised about. My favorite superhero was Spider-Man when I was younger but after watching a couple of animated movies of The Flash, I knew I wanted to be like him. Super underrated character of the DC universe but without him, everything would fall apart.

Gabby - I would want to be like Sue Storm and have invisibility and force field projection powers! I think the Invisible Woman is often underestimated, but her powers are super versatile. Her powers are great for stealth missions, making offensive weapons and defensive powers. A triple threat!
